Robert J. Nelson - President/CEO
My firm specializes in providing comprehensive design-build construction management services for residential, commercial, and industrial projects from concept through close out. I have managed a multitude of projects, in all phases of construction, over the past 40 years.
Career Narrative:
In 1974, I began my construction career as a Project Superintendent for the development of a new 14,000 sf administration building for the North Slope Borough located in Barrow, Alaska. In 1976, upon completion of the administration building, I was assigned the task of developing new communities for seven different regional corporations for the NSB spanning from Point Hope, located in the vicinity of the Bering Straits, to the village of Kaktovik, located in the vicinity of the Canadian border; with five smaller communities scattered in-between. The scope of work was to develop master planned communities on existing lands assigned to the regional corporations. The facilities development plans were to: (1) identify & layout streets, (2) design & develop equipment warm storage facilities, (3) design & develop single and multi-family residences, (4) commercial facilities. These projects lasted until 1981.
From 1981 through 1982, I worked as a Project Foreman for the Department of Energy performing site setup at the Mercury, NV underground nuclear testing site. For this position, I held a Type Q (Top Secret) Security Clearance. In 1982, I moved to Phoenix, AZ to utilize my G.I. Bill to receive my B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Arizona State University. I was also hired by Arizona Maine Chance Resort to function as their facilities manager for a 160-acre property. My job included development and administration of annual capital improvement projects with an average budget of $1M. The facility was purchased and ultimately closed by the new owners.
In 1994, I was retained by Mobile Mini Corporation to act as Director of Field Operations for the production and site set up of various modular school and vocational education buildings. I received my New Mexico GB-98 General Contractor License in 1998. In 2000, I was retained as the Project Manager by Navtec Industries for the renovation of a 54,000-sq. ft. industrial building located in Shiprock, New Mexico. RJN Construction Management was incorporated in the state of Colorado in 2001. Also in that year, RJN was retained by The Kemper Group, a construction surety company, to manage and complete 118 single-family Navajo Housing Authority housing units located in Teec Nos Pos, AZ and Kayenta, AZ. The project had been in default, shut down for 4 months, and was approximately 20% complete when RJN was retained. The multiple-site project required coordination of over 150 workers on two project sites located 75 miles apart. The timely completion of this project promoted the services RJN has to offer, and has afforded RJN the opportunity to successfully solicit and execute project contracts on the Navajo Tribal Reservation to this day.
In May 2012, RJN Construction Management, Inc. received SDVOSB re-certification from the VA CVE. With this, I look to refine and expand the services RJN has to offer, now, and in the future.
